31st Wildflower

When it was started in 1983, Wildflower was one of the first races in the novel sport of triathlon. Designed as a side event to what was truly a bluegrass music festival, the races gradually became the focus of the weekend, and over thirty years later, the trio of triathlons is one of the largest, most highly anticipated elite races in the world. For those who haven’t experienced what has been called the “Woodstock of Triathlons,” Colleen Bousman, President of Tri-California Events, Inc.

Paso Robles Harvest Marathon is a run in the vineyards

Scott Brennan

If you’re looking for a marathon vacation, Paso Robles wine country is the place for you.

It’s the perfect mix of good scenery, good weather and local attractions. The Paso Robles Harvest Marathon is returning for its third year on Sunday, October 28th. It includes a 5k and half-marathon relay.

I ran the course the first two years. It is stunningly beautiful. The race starts out at Le Vigne Winery on the east side and begins a series of short hills to the halfway mark. Local volunteers from cheerleaders to girl scouts show up at the water stations to cheer you on.

Luffa Love: locally-grown luffas and herbs provide natural relief

Is it a sponge? Is it a plant? Just exactly what is a luffa and what are the benefits of using one? A visit to The Luffa Farm in Nipomo for a tour is just the thing you need to do to learn all about it.

“They’re sponges, right?” That’s the question most people ask when they come to the farm. And the answer is no, they are not sponges like the ones that live in the ocean. A luffa is a plant. Proprietor Deanne Coon and her family have been growing luffas for more than 20 years.

Never Going Back to 480

At age 20, Andrew Frudden is a fit, handsome young man with striking brown eyes, clear complexion and rosy pink cheeks that accompany his overall health and his enthusiasm for his new life.

Today, no one would look at Andrew and imagine that just three years ago he was a 480 pound teenager with diminishing hopes of a full life, disabled not only by his burdening weight, but by the overwhelming fear that he might not live to see 20.
