Where to swim on the Central Coast

Swimming provides a fantastic, full-body workout that’s actually fun. There’s something inherently playful about the water, even when adults use it for serious exercise. Unfortunately, swimming season only lasts so long. As soon as summer ends, the demand for refreshing swims in the hot sun comes to an end, and a plethora of pools close down for the fall, winter, and even spring. But what can you do if you want a low impact workout in the water in the off months? Here’s the skinny on where you can dip during the rest of the year:

Paso Robles Harvest Marathon is a run in the vineyards

Scott Brennan

If you’re looking for a marathon vacation, Paso Robles wine country is the place for you.

It’s the perfect mix of good scenery, good weather and local attractions. The Paso Robles Harvest Marathon is returning for its third year on Sunday, October 28th. It includes a 5k and half-marathon relay.

I ran the course the first two years. It is stunningly beautiful. The race starts out at Le Vigne Winery on the east side and begins a series of short hills to the halfway mark. Local volunteers from cheerleaders to girl scouts show up at the water stations to cheer you on.

Onion Tart with Market Greens, Roasted Beets, Candied Fennel Seed Pecans, and Basil Vinaigrette

by Kelly Wangard, Executive Chef at Summerwood Winery & Inn, Paso Robles, CA
Shopping for produce at farmer’s markets is valuable in more way than one. Besides the obvious of getting the freshest produce in season, it is most flavorful because it is picked at the peak of ripeness. Produce that must travel long distances to meet a market will be picked ‘green’ and therefore the flavor and texture will be jeopardized. It is essential for your body to get a variety of different fruit and vegetables and that could be exactly why we have seasons.

Seniors strive for fitness

Age is mind over matter...if you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter. – Mark Twain

The famous quote above by Mark Twain truly represents the philosophy of the home owners at Traditions at River Oaks, a community of over-55 active seniors.

Since August 2013, a group of more than 30 seniors have met twice a week to lift weights, work on balance, flexibility and just have a good time while getting stronger and fit in the process.

Their ages range from 55 to the spry 90-year-old Bonnie Meyer.
