Set sail on your dreams!

Couple shares once-in-a-lifetime island adventure

Tyson Hayward has always dreamt of sailing. Raised in land-locked Calgary, Canada by a father who had competed in the Olympic trials as a Star-Class yacht racer, the call of a watery horizon always beckoned him. So, at his first chance, in his early twenties, he set off for the Virgin Islands. Working as a waiter, he earned his fins as a scuba dive master and spent a year exploring the underwater paradise of the islands.

Making skate boarding history

Close your eyes and imagine a skateboarder. If the first image that came to mind was a 15 year-old with a scowl on his face sliding down the hand rails of a public stairway, it may be time to get a fresh perspective on the sport.
That’s just what you’ll receive from Jack Smith, founder of the Morro Bay Skateboard Museum and publisher of The Skateboarder’s Journal magazine. At 56 years old, the soft-spoken and down-to-earth Smith does not fit the stereotype of the skateboarder; in fact, his work is helping to change the stereotype.

Living and thriving with the big “C”

I grew up in San Luis Obispo. It was an idyllic and active childhood thanks to my amazing parents. I was one of those kids whose parents would literally tell me go outside and play until dinner. This resulted in frequent tromps all around Bishop Peak where I invariably got muddy at the pond. It also included daily trips to the SLO Swim Center for swim practice. The smell of chlorine wafting over the pool on a summer morning makes me want to dive in and crank out a few 1000 meters (time has allowed me to romanticize those killer workouts).

Hiker’s high

Pinnacles National Park offers breathtaking glance of nature at its best

Lying on my back, on a sun-warmed rock, at the top of High Peaks, in the heart of Pinnacles National Park (elevation 1,540), I strive not to move a muscle. My breath is imperceptible, my eyes unblinking.

I’m trying to feel the earth move.

Get in on the Pickleball craze

Fun, social and active sport takes SLO County by storm

Pickleball was once called “the fastest growing sport in the country you’ve never heard of.”  Not anymore. This very fun, very social, very ‘active’ game has grown exponentially since it was first introduced in 1965.

Developed by Washington State representative and eventual Lt. Governor, Joel Pritchard, the name of the sport originated, according to urban legend, in honor of Pritchard’s dog, Pickles, who would chase any errant balls and return them...most of the time.
