Project Surf Camp: Ocean activities build self-confidence for individuals with special needs

Project Surf Camp is proud to announce another great summer for children and families with special needs on the Central Coast. The camps begin on July 11th and run in association with the Morro Bay Recreation Dept.

Project Surf Camp uses surfing, the beach, and other ocean activities as an educational modality to build self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-efficacy in individuals with special needs. We further provide opportunities to build social skills, improve physical fitness, develop healthy outlets for stress reduction, and foster independence.

“We see families coming back year after year and our program just keeps growing,” said Katy Davis, Assistant Executive Director. “This year, we have families and volunteers coming from all over the country. Because of the demand, we are starting to look at expanding our programs to other coasts.”

To keep costs minimal for participants of the four-hour day camp, a volunteer staff is employed for the one-to-one instruction. In addition, unlike similar camps, part of the focus is also on specialist intervention. As a result, camp participants also receive consultation, feedback, and support from three paid specialists. Camper fees are minimal with one quarter of the annual budget generated from participant enrollment fees. The remainder of the budget is funded through private solicitations, grants, and fundraisers and camp sponsorships.

Project Surf Camp is a 501(c)(3) charitable and educational, nonprofit organization designed specifically for individuals with special needs. To sign up, volunteer, or donate visit projectsurfcamp.com or call 805-235-1157.
