Annual South County Turkey Trot is Nov. 28

South County Turkey Trot

Lenny Jones, creator and organizer of the 2nd Annual South County Turkey Trot is proud to announce that this year the event will benefit the San Luis Obispo County Food Bank Coalition and be held in memory of Christine Allen of San Luis Obispo.  The Trot will take place on November 28, 2013 - Thanksgiving Day morning - and will begin and end at the Pismo Beach Pier.

States Jones:  “I always loved spending Thanksgiving morning at the beach as a kid on the Central Coast. With that in mind, I started this event last year so those who also love the beach like me and are thankful can spend that morning having fun and helping to raise some money to replenish the shelves at the Food Bank.”

Jones also decided to dedicate this year’s event in honor of 19 year old Christine Allen of San Luis Obispo who died last May 7th in a rockslide accident. “In her short life, she left behind a legacy of volunteering” says Jones. “She was an amazing young woman. Before her tragic death, she had organized the donation of thousands of pounds of meat to the Food Bank, as well as raised money for the processing of donated animals. She was a true inspiration.”  Christine’s sisters and family will be participating in this year’s Turkey Trot and invite everyone who knew her to join in supporting this worthy cause.

The 2nd Annual South County Turkey Trot – a 10k, 5k and one mile event - will start at the south side of the Pismo Beach pier with line-up beginning at 8:30 am. The course will go north up the beach, then turn around with the 5K going to the Grover Beach ramp back to the pier. The 10K will go down to the Oceano Ramp then back to the pier. The first runners will start at 9:15 am.

This course is open to all family members young and old and the family dog(s). All dogs must be on a short leash for the safety of the runners. Participants can run, walk, jog or crawl. This is a fun non-competitive event. There will be a timing clock at the start/finish line for those who want to track their time. There will be water stations along the race course.

There is no registration fee for the 2nd Annual Turkey Trot but there will be an entry fee of a dollar donation (or more) to the San Luis Obispo County Food Bank Coalition.  “That monetary donation buys a lot at the Food Bank”, adds Jones. “One dollar enables the Food Bank to purchase ten dollars worth of food. That’s why we’re asking for money instead of food.”

Last year’s initial South County Turkey Trot drew about 300 people. This year Jones hopes for many more participants. For more information about the 2nd Annual Turkey Trot, please check the event’s website: www.SouthCountyTurkeyTrot.com or by call or text Lenny Jones at (805) 441-5100.

“Remember, you don’t have to pay to participate in the Turkey Trot,” says Jones. “We just hope you’ll donate a dollar or more if you’d like - to help the Food Bank. It’s a day to be thankful. This is just one way to have fun with family and friends and make a difference.”
