Paso Robles Rugby Club is seeking new players

No prior rugby experience necessary

Gary Brown loves rugby. For years he commuted from Paso Robles to Arroyo Grande after work to play for the Northern California Rugby Football Union. Tired of traveling to Arroyo Grande, north county real estate agent and fellow rugby athlete Larry Dorrough founded the Paso Robles Rugby Football Club in summer 2009. Brown says there are three divisions according to skill that comprise the league. Division I, II, and III separated by skill level. Being a new team the Paso Robles club competes in the union’s Division III club, comprised of teams from Arroyo Grande, Aptos, Pleasant Hill, and San Francisco. 

Brown states Paso’s rugby club has a respectable roster of around 15 north county locals, the minimum to start a club. Ideally the roster would strongest with about 10 more men to combat traveling availability and the 80 minute matches. Having plenty of substitutes is critical in the last minutes of the game.  

Rugby is a very social sport, explains Brown, both on and off the field. The big highlight of course, are the after-parties. Rugby culture is competitive, and that includes which club throws the best after-party. The opposing team is invited to hang out and socialize after the game with the Paso Robles team at The Kilt. 

The season runs from February to March with eight games; four at home, and four away. “We have our own team bus, so transportation is taken care of,” says Brown.   

The Paso rugby club is currently seeking new players and sponsors. “No prior rugby experience necessary. Any one interested can come to our two-touch games and check it out. You just have to be over 18 to play, for wavier purposes,” says Brown. Practices start in November every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30pm to 8:30pm. Location to be determined.
