Running for their lives

Olympic hero returns to Uganda to help orphans

The year was 1988, and the Lord’s Resistance Army, a militant rebel force in Uganda, was taking up arms against the government. In a small village of northern Uganda, 15 children, not older than 12, were kidnapped by the group and ordered to pillage and kill their neighboring villagers. If they disobeyed, the children learned, they would be shot. If they wanted to live, they would have to become killers themselves.

The most unique workout… Barre none

Location, location, location. Apparently it makes as much of a difference in a workout routine as it does in real estate. Perhaps this is because not everyone is inspired to exercise at the sight of an industrial warehouse gym or a room full of hulking workout equipment. Some of us find motivation in the finer details. And for this set, Assets BarreFitness™ has you at ‘hello.’

Disc Golf Course Proposed For Paso Robles

Sponsored by Michael Gill Cellars - Outstanding Paso Robles Syrah

A group of disc golf players are proposing to build new course on the east side of town on 60-acres of open land between Highway 46 and Kleck Road.

Disc golf is played like traditional golf, but instead of a ball and clubs, players use a flying disk or Frisbee and a metal basket called a pole hole.

Kayaking along the Central Coast

Let go of stress aboard a kayak

Sure, taking in the beauty of the Pacific Ocean while driving along Hwy 1 or up the 101 is pretty nice, but enjoying the ocean blue aboard a kayak is, well, pretty spectacular.

Activities:

The Joy of Flying

You are dangling 25 feet in the air. Far below you is nothing but the hard warehouse floor. Holding you up is nothing but a sleek, slippery fabric which increasingly threatens to slide right out of grip with each passing moment.

Team Medicare

During most of the week and on Saturdays, this group rides as  the Slabtown Rollers. This dedicated bunch of cyclists help put on the annual Central Coast Classic and is a blue ribbon winner in the annual Pinedorado Parade. They also recently were instrumental in getting a bike rack in front of Cambria’s Chamber of Commerce and repairing the flagpole. But on Fridays,  the group rides as Team Medicare. The Friday ride starts and ends at the Cambria Roasting Co. next to the Chamber.

Set sail on your dreams!

Couple shares once-in-a-lifetime island adventure

Tyson Hayward has always dreamt of sailing. Raised in land-locked Calgary, Canada by a father who had competed in the Olympic trials as a Star-Class yacht racer, the call of a watery horizon always beckoned him. So, at his first chance, in his early twenties, he set off for the Virgin Islands. Working as a waiter, he earned his fins as a scuba dive master and spent a year exploring the underwater paradise of the islands.

Four Atascadero cyclists ride across America for wounded veterans

A retired Marine will attempt a remarkable event this summer, biking 3,700 miles across the U.S. to raise funds for wounded Marines and sailors.

John Foldberg, at age 57, will be accompanied by Daniel and Nathan Macfarlane and Evan Gillham, three young men who had heard about Foldberg’s endeavor and asked to come along. The four Atascadero residents have formed a group named “CCC4Vets” or “Cross-Country Cyclists for Veterans.” They will leave Anacortes, Washington on August 1, 2013 and bike 60 miles a day until they arrive at Virginia Beach, Virginia mid-October.

Yoga for youthfulness

Acclaimed Yogi Peter Sterios unlocks the keys to longevity

Rugby. Women. The Ego. These are not the reasons for studying yoga that you’d expect to hear from Peter Sterios, a world-renowned yoga master who has taught yoga at the White House and who founded the massively successful yoga mat company, Manduka. But nothing about Sterios and his yoga style is as expected.
